North Gallery partnered with katto to redefine how a contemporary art space exists beyond its physical location. The project focused on building a system where exhibitions, artists, and cultural programming could extend naturally into a digital environment without losing curatorial depth. The work combined identity design, creative strategy, and a flexible web experience built to evolve with each exhibition.
The starting point was a shift in how people experience art. Visits to galleries increasingly begin online, long before someone enters a physical space. This changed the role of digital presence from informational to experiential. Research included editorial design references, archival exhibition systems, and independent art publications. The focus was on understanding how institutions communicate without overwhelming the artwork itself. This stage defined a clear intention: the system should never compete with the art, only frame it.

The identity was designed with restraint as a guiding principle. Typography was kept large, open, and confident, allowing space for content to breathe without distraction. Rather than introducing symbolic visual elements, the system relied on proportion, spacing, and rhythm to build recognition. This created a brand that feels institutional but not rigid. Supporting layouts were designed to adapt across posters, exhibition materials, and digital interfaces without losing consistency.
The website was approached as an extension of the gallery itself. Instead of functioning as a static archive, it behaves like a living exhibition platform. Each exhibition unfolds through layered storytelling, combining imagery, curatorial text, and subtle transitions. Motion was used sparingly to guide attention rather than create spectacle. The result is a digital environment that feels closer to walking through a curated space than browsing a traditional website.

The visual direction avoided overly polished or commercial aesthetics. Instead, it leaned into natural lighting, architectural context, and documentary-style composition. Photography was treated as a supporting layer rather than a central element. The goal was to amplify the artwork, not reinterpret it visually. This created a consistent tone across campaigns, exhibition launches, and digital storytelling.

The final system positioned North Gallery as both a physical and digital cultural platform. Identity and experience worked together as a single structure. Rather than presenting exhibitions as isolated events, the system allowed them to exist within a continuous narrative. This strengthened both audience engagement and curatorial flexibility.
